현재 완료 (Present perfect tense) (1)

* 다음 문장을 잘 읽어봅시다.^^

Jin was miserable. She said nothing. She did not eat or do anything. Sis, Jason, Rabbi were with her. Other koalas dropped by from time to time, but Jin was the same. She was exhausted and fell asleep. In her dream, she was a baby and her mom was carrying her. Jin was relieved to be with her mom again. But after a moment Jin was alone on the top of a tree. She was so small and scared. She called her mom but there was no answer. Suddenly she started to fall from the tree. While she was falling, she spotted her mom. She was falling as well. Jin tried to reach her. She was very close. Jin could feel her soft hair. "Mom I got you." As soon as Jin said, she woke up.

"Wake up Jin. It is OK. It is just a dream. Wake up." Sis said. "Did you have a bad dream?" Jin started to cry. "I don't know. I was with Mom, but suddenly she was not there. What happened to her? I am so worried about her." Sis came close to Jin and said, " She is going to be fine. Don't worry. If your mom sees you now, she won't be happy. Let's eat something and go out to find her. OK?" Jin noded. "You are right. I will go out and find her by myself."

"Jin are you awake?" It was Jason. "I have got a news about her, your mother. A dove living near the town has seen her. Yesterday, when the dove was flying above the town, she saw a koala with some people. The dove knew about your mom, so she checked. Your mom was fine." Jin exclaimed, "Where is the town? Let's go to save her now." Jason stopped her and said, "Jin, we need some plan. We just can't go there. At least she is safe now. People with her looked nice. In that case they can be the forest rangers and they will take her to a better place for koalas. So we should get her back before they send her far away."

I have got a news about her, your mother.
A dove living near the town has seen her.

* 자, 이제 함께 생각해 봅시다:

1) 위의 이야기에서 가장 중요한 정보는 무엇일까요?

2) 마지막 두 문장은 이 정보와 어떤 관계가 있을까요?

3) 마지막 두 문장을 I got a news about her, your mother. A dove living near the town saw her. 라고 쓰면 틀린 문장일까요?



현재완료와 과거 시제

*의미 - 현재 완료는 영어의 독특한 표현으로서 우리말에는 없는 시제이므로 다른 시제처럼 일대일 대응의 해석은 불가능합니다. 시제는 단순히 시간에 대한 것만이 아니라 그 사실을 어떻게 생각하는가의 문제이기도 합니다. 예를 들어 과거 시제는
1) 그것이 지나간 시간 중에 발생했다는 시간적인 의미,
2) 이미 지나간 시간은 돌이킬 수 없으므로 현재에는 사실이 아닌 것이라는 관점을 말할 수 있습니다.

그런데 시간적으로 과거에 발생한 일이지만 그것이 현재까지도 영향을 미치는 경우가 있습니다.
즉 같은 상황이라도 사람에 따라 그저 단순히 과거에 일어난 일이 될 수도 있고 반면 아주 중요한 일로 오래 마음에 남을 수도 있습니다.
현재완료는 과거에 일어난 일이지만 과거라는 시간보다 그 사실이 더 중요하기 때문에 쓰는 시제입니다.
그러므로 해석은 과거 시제와 같지만 관점은 다릅니다.

*** 한걸음 더 : 관점(aspect)

과거 시제가 ‘지나간 일’ 이라는 시간에 중점을 두는 표현이라면 현재완료는 과거의 사건임에도 불구하고 시간 보다는 사실이 중요하다고 봅니다.
즉 말하는 사람(화자)이 과거에 일어난 어떤 일에 대해, 과거와 현재 완료 어떤 시제를 쓸 것인가를 주관적으로 판단하고 두 가지 시제 중에서 선택하여 쓸 수 있습니다.
그러므로 같은 사실이라도 말하는 사람에 따라 같은 사실이 다른 시제로 표현될 수 도 있습니다.
예를 들어, 어제 동방신기를 좋아하는 현선 이와 동방 신기에 대해 별 감정이 없는 현선이의 사촌이 함께 길을 가다가 동방 신기 멤버를 보았다면, 다음과 같이 다르게 말 할 수 있습니다.

현선 : I've seen 박유천. -- 현선에게는 이 사실이 중요하다.

사촌 : I saw 박유천. -- 사촌은 그저 과거에 일어난 일일 뿐이다.

즉 같은 사실이라도 어떤 시제를 쓰는가에 따라 말하는 사람의 감정과 생각을 읽을 수 있습니다. 이 감정과 생각이 바로 ‘관점’ 입니다.

정리해보면,현재완료는 시간보다 이 관점을 더욱 중요시 하는 시제입니다. 그러면 과거를 말하는 시제에 왜 현재 완료(present perfect)라는 이름을 붙였을까요? 그것은 ‘중요한 사실’이라는 것이 대부분 그렇듯이, 이 시제에서 과거의 사실이 중요하다는 것은 곧 그 사실이 현재까지도 연관되거나 영향을 미친다는 생각 때문입니다. 즉 ‘현재까지 영향을 미치는 과거의 사실’ 입니다. 그래서 현재완료는 과거에 일어난 사건이지만 그 중에서 중요하고 주목할 만한 사건을 말하는 방송 뉴스에서 많이 쓰입니다.

예를 들어 미국에서 9.11 테러가 발생했을 당시 미국의 방송은 다음과 같이 말했습니다.

“The world trade center has collapsed."

* 형태 - 불규칙 과거 분사는 반드시 외우고 부정형에 주의 (+긍정문 / -부정문 / ?의문문)

(+) have(has) + 과거 분사(규칙형은 과거와 같고, 불규칙은 암기)
주어가 대명사면 거의 축약형 (I've, She's, He's, We've ..)

World trade center has collapsed.
We've seen it on TV.



(-) have(has) not +p.p

I haven't heard any of it.
She hasn't gotten the news.



(?) Have +S +p.p ? Yes, I have. / No I have not.

Have you heard the news? Yes, I have.
Has she come home? No, she hasn't.







*현재 완료와 시간 표현

위에서 말한 것처럼 현재 완료는 과거의 ‘사실’ 에 초점을 두기 때문에

(1)그 사건이 일어난 과거의 시간 (즉 시점)을 함께 쓰지 않습니다.

I've met my old friend yesterday. (X)
They have seen a man at eleven p.m. (X)

(2) 단순한 일상은 현재 완료로 쓰는 경우가 거의 없습니다.

I've had dinner. -- 틀렸다고 할 순 없지만 어색합니다. 마치 저녁을 평소에는 안 먹다가 먹었다고말하는 느낌이 듭니다.



(3) 다음 두 문장을 비교해 봅시다.

I've had three glasses of water this afternoon. - 아직도 오늘 오후
I had three glasses of water this afternoon. - 오후는 다 지난 시점



(4) when vs how many times

현재완료는 의문문이든 부사절이든 when 과 함께 쓰는 일은 없습니다. when 자체가시간을 묻고 있기 때문입니다.

대신 how many times는 얼마나 여러 번 해보았는가를묻기 때문에 당연히 과거에 일어난 일이지만 행동을 묻고 있으므로 현재완료에 적합한 질문입니다.

같은 이치로 서너 번(several times .. two times) 등도 현재완료에 적절한 표현이 됩니다.

* 현재 완료가 문법 문제가 되는 경우는 주어에 따라 have인가 has 인가 / 올바른 과거분사 / 그리고 올바른 시간 표현이 쓰였는가 입니다. 그러므로 관련된 시간 표현들은 반드시 외워야합니다.



* 시제와 적절한 부사: 꼭, 반드시, 필히 외우셔야 합니다.^^
